Maya at 17 Months (left) and Kalla at 30 Months

Breed: Australian ShepherdVariety: Blue Merle
Variety: MiniatureWeight: 26 pounds
Gender: Female
Favorite Food: Anything and everything, but she loves Flint River Ranch Dry Water Kibble!
Favorite Activities: She excels at being cute and playing with her "sister", Kalla.
Favorite Place to Sleep: She likes to sleep on our bed; between our legs at the foot of the bed.
Story: We rescued Maya from Aussie Rescues near San Diego when she was only three months old. She stole our hearts with her perfect "Aussie manner" and those amazing steel-blue eyes. We were leery of the "Mini Aussie" tag, as we weren't sure there was such a breed, but she remains small for an Aussie, which is just fine for us - perfect cuddle size, and she loves to be cuddled and to have her tummy scratched. But don't let that cuddly appearance fool you - she can take care of herself, and handily keeps Kalla at bay - she's a "remora" to Kalla - constantly nipping at her heels and haunches. She is the cute one!

Breed: Border CollieWeight: 31 pounds
Gender: Female
Favorite Food: Kalla would definitely rather play ball than eat - the world revolves around her ball! This posed quite the challenge, as many of the foods we tried did not interest her. Finally, taking a recommendation from a friend in the dog training business, we tried Flint River Ranch Dry Water Kibble - Kalla loves it, particularly the gravy!
Favorite Activities: There is NOTHING that interests Kalla more than her ball!
Favorite Place to Sleep: She sleeps in her bed in our daughter's room.
Story: We purchased Kalla from a breeder in San Anselmo. She comes from a long line of champion agility Border Collies. Kalla was dragged across the play pen by her tail when she was a small puppy, causing nerve damage to her tail. By the time she was four months old, she could still not wag her tail, nor move it up, but the hope was that eventually, the ability to move it would come back. Unfortunately, it did start to respond by tingling around mid-tail - we deduced this by the fact that she was chewing on her tail regularly, and eventually, the urge to chew was overwhelming, and she chewed *through* her tail - poor baby! We then had the remaining part docked to Aussie length, and now, both of our dogs are without tail: one that's supposed to be that way, and the other that's not. But that has in no way detracted from Kalla's energy, speed, and intelligence - she is easily the smartest dog we've every owned! Plus she's all legs and is easily the fastest dog at the dog park whenever she's there. Kalla would make a great fly ball competitor, with her love for the ball and her excellent speed. She is the smart one!
